Terms of use

Short, because the service is narrow. Reading this page is not a substitute for what happens to your file, which is the part most people are actually asking about.

What the service does

You upload a Word document, up to 25 MB, and pick a target. foliom recovers the document's structure, renders it into that publisher's own LaTeX class with the options their author guide specifies, compiles a PDF, and returns the PDF, the LaTeX source, a submission bundle and a pre-flight report. It then verifies its own output against your source, paragraph by paragraph, and tells you if that check fails. It does not write, rewrite, summarise or reorder your paper.

Your manuscript stays yours

You keep every right in what you upload and in everything the conversion produces from it. Nothing here transfers a licence, claims authorship, or gives anybody permission to publish, quote or redistribute your work. The only thing you permit by uploading is the conversion itself and the storage of its results for you to download — privacy is where that is spelled out. Upload only work you have the right to upload.

No warranty, and specifically no promise about your submission

The service is provided as it is, with no warranty of any kind. In particular:

• Nothing here says a publisher will accept your submission. The pre-flight report checks a finished PDF against requirements a publisher has published — abstract length, figure resolution, uncited references, the declarations a venue asks for. An editorial office decides what it decides, and a clean report is not a review, an endorsement or a guarantee of anything.
• A class file is the publisher's own, and its behaviour is theirs. A template that changes, a requirement that is not in any author guide, or a venue that wants something else entirely will show up as a conversion that is wrong for your target. Read what comes back before you submit it.
• Availability is not promised. There is no uptime commitment, no support commitment and no notice period: this instance can be unavailable, and can stop running. Nothing here is a backup. Keep your own copy of anything you would mind losing — the manuscript above all, since a conversion output is reproducible from it and your manuscript is not reproducible from anything.
• No liability is accepted for a missed deadline, a rejected submission, a lost file or anything else that follows from using or being unable to use the service, to whatever extent the law where you are allows that to be said.

Using it fairly

Convert papers. Do not upload work that is not yours to upload, do not use the service to process material that is unlawful to hold, and do not try to make it do something other than convert a document — script it against a rate limit, mine it for the vendored class files, or use it as storage. Requests are rate-limited per address, and whoever runs this instance may remove an account, refuse a conversion, or take the service down to keep it working for everybody else. An account exists so that an upload belongs to a person who can see it and delete it; it is yours alone, and you are responsible for what is converted through it.

Money

Conversions on this instance are metered in credits. One conversion that produces a PDF costs one credit, a new account is given a small number to start with, and a conversion that fails is refunded — you are not charged for this server’s own failures. Running your manuscript against every target to compare them costs nothing.

Nothing here takes payment. There is no subscription, no invoice and no payment detail to hand over, because there is nothing on this instance that could accept one: credits are added by hand by whoever runs it, and your credits page is where you ask and where every movement is recorded. Nothing on this page promises that it will stay that way, or that this instance will keep running at all.

Changes, and how to make contact

These terms describe how the service behaves today, and when the behaviour changes this page changes with it. If you disagree with what it says, stop uploading and delete your conversions, or delete the account to take all of them and the address with it.
